Dissertation House 12 Hour Marathon Session Comes to PROMISE SSI

The 2011 PROMISE Summer Success Institute will sponsor a 12 Hour Marathon “Dissertation House” session at the Sheraton Columbia Hotel on Friday, August 19. The marathon will last from 1:00 PM Friday, 8/19 until 1:00 AM Saturday, 8/20. This session is limited to PROMISE DH alumni and a limited number of guests.

Eligibility and Instructions

Interested students must:

Be a doctoral candidate or alumnus of a previous Dissertation House
Have a history of conversations about your dissertation with either Dr. Wendy Carter-Veale or Dr. Renetta Tull.
Be registered for the PROMISE Summer Success Institute, and plan to fully participate in the other parts of the conference (outside of the DH) on Friday morning 8/19, and all day Saturday, 8/20. http://promisesuccessseminars.wordpress.com/promise-summer-success-institute-ssi/

Dr. Renetta Garrison Tull is the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) at the University of California Davis. She previously served as Associate Vice Provost for Strategic Initiatives at The Graduate School at UMBC, and was Professor of the Practice in the College of Engineering & IT. She was Special Assistant to the Sr. Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs & Director of Graduate and Professional Pipeline Development for the University System of Maryland (12 institutions). She is the Founding Director of PROMISE: Maryland’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) – http://www.umbc.edu/promise, and Co-PI for the USM LSAMP. Her research on global diversity in STEM continues, and she is an international speaker, covering nearly all continents, for groups and conferences such as the World Engineering Education Forum, the International Federation of Engineering Education Societies, and the Pacific Sciences Congress. Everyone leaving from College Park to attend SSI we have transportation chartered. That way we can read or sleep while someone else drives. I will send an email for people to register soon. The bus will leave at 7:15 am.

What is dissertation house?

The Dissertation House program is an intensive writing retreat designed to help graduate students overcome the barriers that often impede progress on their dissertations. Developed by the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, the program provides a supportive and structured environment where students can focus on their writing, receive feedback, and learn effective time management and goal-setting strategies. Over several days, students work in groups, participate in workshops, and receive coaching from experienced facilitators. The Dissertation House program has been highly successful in helping students make significant progress on their dissertations. It is widely regarded as a valuable resource for graduate students seeking to complete their degrees.
