Congratulations on getting to this page. Summer 2020 Challenge!

Welcome to Dissertation House ONLINE. If you are here, you are in the right place. This is your page to make the most of your experience here. You can get your dissertation finished in 2020 with daily progress.

Welcome to the Dissertation House online, Summer 2020! This page will be active from July 2020 – December 2020. Congratulations to all of our new PhDs!  (See our “Alumni” page for regular updates.) You can participate in the online Dissertation House from any part of the world. Students join the Dissertation House (DH) from various states in the US and many countries in the world. The “DHers” who participate in person come from universities throughout Maryland, with sponsorship from the National Science Foundation’s PROMISE: Maryland’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP), and funding from the graduate schools at UMBC, the University of Maryland College Park, and the University of Maryland Baltimore – The Founding Campus. Through the PROMISE Pathways initiative, and the PROMISE AGEP: Maryland Transformation project, we invite and encourage all doctoral students within the University System of Maryland to join us online.

Dr. Wendy Carter-Veale is your “Head Coach.” Our pre-registered participants are required to blog daily during their time in the Dissertation House and are encouraged to continue blogging until they finish their dissertations.

To join us online:

  1. Go to the comment section below and introduce yourself (name, school, department.) Note: You may use your full name or an alias. If you have a blog, you may use your blogger ID, however, you do not need a username or password to participate.
  2. Tell us what you are working on and what you plan to accomplish today or over the next few days.
  3. Blog daily, preferably twice a day (morning and afternoon/evening) to report your goals for the day, your daily accomplishments, and your goals for the next day.

We will repeat something that we said before, because it is both important and true: Our graduates and participants pushed (and we do mean that they pushed through adversities, complications, and issues) to finish sections, get chapter approval from advisors, complete drafts, pass proposals, pass defenses, and turn in their final documents. These grads are now professors, working in non-profits, industry, and have had postdocs throughout the global academic community (e.g., France, South Africa, Egypt.)

If you have joined us in the past, come back again if you are still working on your document. We are still here, and we will still be part of the community that will cheer you on! Post your goals for the next six months on this page. You are not alone, this is your online community. Focus on completion. As coach Dr. CV says “A good dissertation is a done dissertation.”

  1. Welcome to day 1 of the Dissertation House. We are looking forward to your participation this weeks.

  2. Good morning! Today I plan to update/finalize my dataset.

    1. Today I was able to make great progress on updating my dataset! My goal is to finish by the end of tomorrow’s session.

      1. Yes Future Dr. The dataset is almost there and sometimes almost is good enough to run some preliminary models, or some descriptive statistics to see if you have coded things correctly. Did you know that SPSS can generate a code book from your data for you? When you decide to stop tweaking the data generate a code-book to see what you have ask me how when you see me tomorrow.

Hi all! My name is Breanna and I am a rising 6th year student in the Human Services Psychology Program. My goal for today is to finalize my Method section, which will include editing my procedures subsection and fleshing out the data plan subsection.

    1. Hello Breanna, I hope you got the method done and moving on to the Lit Review. It was good to meet you in the DH for the first time. I hope that you use my Lit Review method to get started on that part of the project.

  4. Hello all,
One of my goal for this week is to finalize the LR. Today I finished from outlining MOST of it. Tomorrow I’m planning to add few studies if needed to the LR and start working on references.

    1. Iman good to see that the LR is almost done. See if you can draw a diagram that explains the literature review and what gap you are filling with your study. I would love to see it when we meet for our 1 on 1 .

  5. Hi All, I am Avani 4th year Ph.D. student, Today I was able to make the great process both in writing and brainstorming ideas. I feel Dr. Carter’s guidance was very helpful and apt for motivating. I was able to the majority of the section 5.1 which I was planning to accomplished.

    1. Hello Avani where do we go to tomorrow. Good to see 5.1 move forward will you do 5.2 or 5.1.1 in the morning?

  6. Today, I revised J2 and submitted to where it belongs ^_^ and yessss!
I also looked at the analysis results of the new added datasets and saw how the comparison would be promising. I outlined some lines for the analysis write up. I have some concerns if that would make any differences, even the results seem they contradict what I already said from my prior data analysis.

Tomorrow, I am planning to address some feedback of J3 and think more about what I would do with the new added datasets, I really to think to just ignore it and move on with already I get.

    1. Good to hear about the progress, tomorrow is another day to move it forward just a bit more.

  7. Day 2 of the DH starts tomorrow. We have wonderful group of women in the DH our first virtual sessions. Keep up the good work ladies. I am looking forward to seeing you all again at 9am sharp. Get your coffee, water and mind ready to work.

  8. Hi All,
My goal for Day 1 was to review my note again to outline Ch1 and to select relevant references. Not perfect, but I was able to make progress – reformatted the dissertation template to work easier for now; started writing paragraphs and added some references.

My goal for today, Day2, is to finish a draft of Ch1. Although I might not be able to complete research questions, I’ll write up some to make my research more sense and stronger.

Dr. Carter – Thanks for your valuable advice on my research questions yesterday! It was very helpful!

  9. Good morning!

My goal for today is to outline Chapter 2 and review my notes.

    1. This morning I suggested that you think about doing the Methodology Chapter; I know it is a radical move to consider doing things out of order or some alternative that is not linear. I hope you at least considered it as a viable option.

  19. My goal for today is to continue working on methodology chapter and apply the feedback on my accepted paper and think how can I apply this feedback in my research because reviewers mentioned reasonable questions that I haven’t think of in my research.

    1. Iman glad to see that you have moved on to the Methodology chapter and good to see you making forward progress; keep going.

    2. Today I focus more on methods for each research questions. Also, I wrote new subtitle in LR based on the feedback from the reviewers. Goals met !! clap clap

  20. My goal today is to complete a draft of survey questions and variables.

    1. Harry thanks for posting and welcome to the online DH. You should be able to have that instrument done by this afternoon at 445. I would love to see the page that you wrote on race and political participation in the US. Send it to me via my email.

  21. Today, I am going to add a relating paragrph describing the new dataset in methodology – data selection. Then, I will be talking about the cluster analysis findings in results section.

    1. Keep moving forward. I hope that you were able to drag and drop the new tables in per our discussion. It’s 248 you should have been able to write a minimum 1 paragraph to describe your new table.

  22. Today I will continue addressing my committee’s edits. My goal is to completely finish 2 of the 3 “medium” edits and all of the “easy” edits.

    1. I finished two “medium” edits today, along with some research on how to address the lone “difficult” edit. I feel accomplished 🙂

      1. Future Dr. Welcome to day 2 of the DH and to your medium edits. I hope you get them out of the way today and move on to “difficult” over the weekend.

      2. Congrats on moving on to the difficult lone edit and that you have some insight on how to handle it is fantastic. Good luck.

  23. Today I will continue drafting the 1.1 of my lit review.
